ART THERAPY

Children have emotional needs similar to adults but they may not be able to verbally communicate their feelings effectively. Sometimes, children feel safe when they communicate their feelings and emotions through expressions of art with the use of various art mediums such as clay, painting, drawing and mask making. Often children can tap into their inner creative voice and process their feelings. By pairing creative work within the process of a safe play therapy environment, a child’s language can sometimes be heard in a way that talk therapy cannot access.
At Barnett Counseling Services utilization of Art Therapy can help children, adolescents and even adults learn social skills, gain academic excellence, foster self-esteem, reduce symptoms of anxiety/depression and identify feelings and beliefs that can be difficult to access. Art therapy is also a way for children and adults to process trauma, loss, grief and painful memories. Art Therapy can also allow the mind to tap into feelings, emotions and language that supports healing and communication with difficult experiences due to developmental age and with people who struggle with trust and attachment issues.
